Feeding My Baby "Real" Food

It is not my intention to make this blog about all things baby, but since I am writing about my life it is probably going to come up. Recently I noticed my daughter was acting really really ready to eat at about 5 months old. One might think this would be a fun turn of events, but instead it was absolutely terrifying because there is A LOT of different information floating around and none of it was consistent. A lot of this information is merely opinion/circumstantial, so I am posting what I have found is working for us and sharing the research that led me there. I am not an authority on the subject, but maybe this will help someone who was searching like I was. I especially found the books by Jenna Helwig to be VERY helpful.

A lot of my friends are really pumped on the idea of baby led weaning. If you are thinking about it, I would start with THIS article by a feeding therapist. After reading this, I decided I would like to do a hybrid of tradition puree introduction and what Jenna Helwig calls "baby led feeding."

I was still hoping to wait until my baby was 6 months old to start food because my baby has great digestion, and I didn't want to rock the boat. Well that changed. Beside showing all signs of readiness, she was also practically begging to eat with us. It started to feel like I was torturing her by eating in front of her. I also noticed around this time that her poop started to change. (Sorry if this is TMI, but parents talk about their children's bodily functions...its just the way it goes.) It started to smell worse and was a bit thicker.

I was freaked out because a lot of people online say things like "feeding your baby food before 6 months of age can hurt their gut health for life..." I wanted to be super sure it was safe to feed her, so for about a week, I searched for medical and scientific information on the issue. Well I finally came to a post on The Seattle Children's Hospital blog. I highly suggest checking it out HERE.

Not only is it totally safe to give your baby food (if they show signs of readiness) at 4 months old, it can be helpful to start allergen introduction earlier rather than later. Also, breastfed babies need iron at 6 months old and starting earlier can be helpful!

Here's when things got fun! I am a foodie, so this is the part I like. As Helwig points out in her books, this is an exciting opportunity to introduce baby to new things! I think I started feeding her at 5 months and 1 week. I started with a probiotic oat cereal mixed with breast milk. After a few days of that (and no issues, no, not even constipation) I mixed the cereal/breast milk with green bean puree that I made myself in the baby bullet. At this point I started using the guide from "Real Baby Food". Basically at this stage she is eating 2 meals per day of cereal/breastmilk/veg or fruit puree all mixed together. She has had green beans, green peas, prunes, avocado, sweet potato, apples (with peanut), spinach, pears (with egg), and bananas (with tree nut). We are using Inspired Start for the allergen introduction. I am using either quinoa, oat, or barley baby cereal. I am skipping rice because of the arsenic thing (read about that HERE). I am making some puree, some I bought. I am going to start to add flavor to her food soon like fennel, mint, and basil. This is all fun, but its time consuming and super messy because I am letting my daughter use the spoon herself. I'm just helping her.

One other way that I am deviating from what Helwig recommends is that the 2 meals I feed her are mid-morning and at family dinner. I was shooting for the recommended breakfast then lunch meals, but that didn't work well for our family schedule. I usually heat the food in our bottle warmer. I am planning to try a cold cucumber one soon (maybe with mint?). I also let her sip a little water from the honey bear cup or sippy cup (whatever is clean). I read about that HERE.

There you go! That's my story. I am sure when I have another baby, it will be totally different.

My Absence

Hi Friends!

It has been a year since I posted...I can't believe it. What happened to me? Well, I had a baby. As anyone who has had a baby knows, this can really turn a life around. I would like to start posting here again more often though. I still have lots of rambling to do.

Here are some steak bites I made the other day. I get most of my food ideas from Pinterest, and this is no exception. I used grass-fed beef from my parent's ranch in Montana, fresh baked baguette from a local bakery, organic/free-range goat cheese, and delicious fresh parsley for the chimichurri. In the final analysis, I should have sliced the steak way thinner, but they were tasty and photogenic.

Beautiful Greeting Cards!

Gone are the days when we need to send generic greeting cards to our loved ones. I don't send greeting cards often, but when I do, I want them to be a reflection of my personal style. I recently met with an amazing artist name Cynthia Mosser. She creates whimsical, feminine, modern art with a vintage flair. It matches my personal style perfectly! I am ecstatic that she offers a pack of greetings cards, which allows me to explore her art, the way it feels in my home, and share it with others before I decide to purchase a large piece.

I love supporting local artists too. Artists are the life-blood of communities, and without our support they cannot continue to enhance the world around us. Is there some small way you can support local art in your community? The size of the investment is up to you.

These make me so excited for my next thank-you note! Since a picture is worth a thousand words:

Peony Love!

I just love spring. I was born in the spring. I hate being cold. Not to mention, the flowers start blooming. It has been spring in the Pacific Northwest for a while now. But cutting some peonies for my kitchen island truly gave the house that "spring vibe" that I am planning to cherish for a few more weeks. Spring is a state of mind for me. I notice it every year.

Sedona, Arizona: Magical Land of Red Rocks

After settling back into work mode, I have been thinking back on my recent travels. It is hard to know what will stick with me when I am on the road, but after settling and sleeping in my own bed I have many trip memories. My travels last month took me to Phoenix, Santa Fe, Northern New Mexico, and Chicago. All these places offered something special. Today, as I look out on the green grass and many blooms in the Portland OR area, I remember the intense sun and red rock formations from my one night in Sedona Arizona.

Sedona is a lot cooler than Phoenix due to elevation which we noticed right away when we found ourselves panting on a short little walk. We saw the sights; downtown, tlaquepaque art village, took a bus tour, ate rattlesnake and cactus at The Cowboy Club. The part that sticks now is the vision of the grand vistas and unforgettable views.

On the Road

Dear Friends,

I am getting ready to travel for 3 weeks! Hope to have some exciting travel tales and picture for you upon my return. Don't you love how tidy the suitcase looks in the beginning? It never stays that way.

3 Life Lessons that Translate to Marketing Concepts

  1. Start With Yourself
We have all seen Gandhi's “Be the change....” posted as a meme on every inspirational page ever. There is a reason for this fact, it is great advice. It is pithy and practical. No one can argue the point. This concept also works in relationships, in career, and yes, in marketing. Just like you cannot attract the perfect mate or friend until you are happy with where you are in life, you also cannot attract the perfect business client until you develop a voice, brand, and professional image that you love authentically. This may seem obvious, but then why is their so much marketing content out there that falls flat on this point? 80% of the time, generic-feeling marketing content is caused by a company failing to prioritize marketing that reflects the founding mission and values.

  1. You Can't Win'em All
When life inevitably teaches you what it feels like to start from a place of self knowledge, two things happen. The first is that certain people in your life fade away or abruptly break it off with you completely. The second is that people who are in a similar place of self-empowerment enter your life and stay. The same is true in marketing, and that is why so many businesses are afraid of true authenticity. These businesses are afraid of step one. They fear that when the people who don't align with the mission fall away, there will be no one left. Even though these customers are usually the kind that cause heartache (or at least neck pain), it is hard to trust that your perfect people will be waiting on the other side of this purge. Trust me, all people who experience this process personally or professionally with tell you, your perfect friends, lover, and clients are out there ready for you to tell them who you are.

  1. You Don't Have to Jump Off the Cliff
I can hear my mother's voice now. It's so obvious that just because the other kids are jumping off a cliff, I don't have to. Then why do so many businesses still jump off all these marketing cliffs? I am not saying a businesses shouldn't pay attention to marketing trends, but trend examination should come from a place of reflection on appropriate voice for a brand. The latest example I have seen is Facebook Live. Every marketing trend tracker is talking about Facebook Live, and people are using it. Way. Too. Much. Before you start making videos of yourself talking about your business every single day, ask yourself, is this resonant with your audience. So many of these Facebook Live posts would be so much more appropriate on a platform like a business YouTube channel where the presentation is a little more subtle and respectful of the personal nature and urgency of Facebook. So before you jump off the next marketing trend cliff, ask yourself if it truly reflects your brand. Ignore the fear mongering click-bait that says “If you aren't using this new marketing trend, you are missing sales!”
